I am holding up a stone crab in Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay, part of a workshop at the University of Rhode Island's Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting.
I work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service as a writer/editor for the public affairs staff. My agency offers technical assistance and cost-share programs to farmers and ranchers who implement environmentally friendly practices on their land.
Before coming to NRCS, I was a reporter for The Clarion-Ledger. I covered Rankin County, Mississippi, a semi-rural, semi-suburban county that neighbors nearby Jackson, the state’s capital. I cover city government, county government and law enforcement.
I completed internships at The Clarion-Ledger and The Modesto (Calif.) Bee. I graduated in May from Louisiana State University, where I was editor of my college newspaper, The Daily Reveille. Under my leadership, we grew traffic on our website — lsureveille.com — by 40 percent in one year. Editor & Publisher magazine also named our Web site the best in the nation for the 2007-2008 academic year.
I am also getting my master’s in urban and regional planning from Jackson State University. My emphasis is on environmental planning, a key area that bridges the well-being of a community with the environment. I plan to graduate in fall 2011.
